Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

We can rule out something like uglyduckling, that was my first instinct too.

I noticed the spaces as well, but have no idea how that might factor in.
Then again, while typing that, I remember there being odd spaces like that in one of the text-based adventure games that distinguished words which, when asked about, would progress the adventure.

I'll try adding them to the url.

EDIT: Worth trying; it didn't work.

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

I've had a wild hint floating around in my head thought I would just post it in case.

The image with the L on it and the clouds, I think might refer to the word L(air) and if you count the spaces between the words (don't count spaces that are less than 2), you get a number 5247. The numbers you would get if you put the word Lair into a mobile phone. Feels like a wild guess in the dark though.

That's really interesting. I hope it ends up being more than a coincidence; This sort of far-out problem solving is in part what drew me to the game in the first place.
I tried adding various combinations of Lair, Lair.png, LAIR.png, Lair5247, etc. to the url, but haven't found anything yet.

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

These seem like great ideas. And I agree that this clue has got to be referring to Jane Ruano. Has anyone made any progress here?

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

I don't think index2 is a significant data point. If you just visit a url that doesn't end in a file name (eg .../speculat1on/4ECOEARTH/) most web servers by default assume you meant /speculat1on/4ECOEARTH/index.html, and if you add index.html to the end of the challenge page like that you'll see you get the same page back. Index2 was most likely just the creator being unimaginative with page names, and it looks like other challenges follow the same pattern of having the actual challenge web page be index2.html.

What I wonder... the image was clearly photoshopped (the dot seems to have been cloned and much of the rest of the image brushed out), so why might that be. I have been unable to locate an original stock image via google search, or find any clue about whether the manipulations might be significant. Are there any good previous examples of similar problems?

Wow, that is insane! Ha! I wasn't sure about the Lair5247 clues but we are definitely on the right track now!

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

Has anyone tried calling the number we've found (5247) with a Chicago area code? I'm not in the mood to make an international call. (Props to Slometheus for this idea)

Oh, and I haven't heard back from Jane Ruano.

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

Hey quick post, just typed in examine fern like plant into google, and got a result from Craigslist.

"You pick it up and turn it over in your hands. The plant is alive, strangely enough. You didn't expect something like that from them. There's ..."

I couldn't see the rest at the moment, it said it had expired but the above part was on the Google result.

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

afoolsuchasi - Brilliant, I thought we couldn't go further since it was expired. I think we might have enough for another craigslist- I typed smudged business card into google. There's an Examine Smudged Business Card but its also another expired link.

"Examine smudged business card. Date: 2012-06-10, 10:50PM CDT Reply to: c6wfr-3070126818@comm.craigslist.org. the name catches in your memory but ..."

All appearing in Chicago's Craiglist so far and most were posted on the 10th of June.

Bam, searched 'read'

Full message:

"You pick it up and turn it over in your hands. The plant is alive, strangely enough. You didn't expect something like that from them. There's something stuck halfway in the dirt, some kind of smudged business card. It's got a name on it, but you can't read everything else, the ink has run."

Why do you tease me so, google cache.

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

Using the craigslist + number + last word combination, I found this too from Examine Smudged Business Card.

"the name catches in your memory but. it's NOT ok to ..."

* Which afoolsuchasi already posted, hehe.

Lol I just did that but I think that's the default craigslist 'not ok to contact this poster'

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

The punctuation is weird. Usually these have capitals at the beginning of sentences, and elipses between the cutoff and the end of the page. I see a period after 'but' and no capital on 'the.' might be the middle of a sentence or something.

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

Could also be a dead end instruction. Lots of actions in text based adventures are useless. Maybe we can do more with the previous clue + James Powell.

Re: NEXUS07/4ECOEARTH

I went back and looked at the window, there's another craigslist- Examine tall window.
"The window looks out on other buildings that resemble this one. They're close together and tall, mirrored faces reflect the sun. You can't see into them. -look out the window. Location..."

Possibly another one on Craigslist- Climb the east wall with the hole.
"You can feel wires within the wall, and a few snap under your weight. ... -examine east wall ..."

Also another one- Examine hole (google- Examine hole east wall)
“You could probably climb the east wall with the hole, it looks soft and like the plaster is decaying."
