Good call indeed. Helpful to have it all in one spot.

Re: JP Journal(s)

Yeah, definitely helpful!

Speaking of archiving technicalities, I'm going to add to the spreadsheet in a bit and get the sound files in there. I put in the journal entries in case there was a theme between entries from passwords 0.1, 1.1, 2.1, etc., but would it be easier to read the whole thing if I just referenced the entry number and linked here?

Re: JP Journal(s)

This is crossposted from Reddit, sorry if you already saw it there. Here is the new journal entry:

"When I was a kid, things were different. I lived in a box on Beach Road in New Watts. Later, I moved to New York and got by. Recently, I moved to an apartment the size of a closet on Brunswick and 8th. Much has changed from my childhood. Now, I live on the east coast. Now, if I deactivate my Reticle tether, I’m in a private space. Now, I’m closer to the servers than ever before. Now, I have a half-hour commute to work and back."

OK, so this one is particularly interesting. I really like the idea of Watts as an electrical term, but I was tipped off by the "Now, I live on the east coast" line and decided New Watts wasn't an abstraction, but a real place.

Turns out, I was half-right. There is no New Watts, but there sure is a Watts-- a suburb of Los Angeles, with a history of working-class riots. Also, with towers as its most recognizable architectural feature. Look it up on Wikipedia.

Turns out, there's no Beach Road in Watts, at least not one logged by Google Maps. BUT, there is a Beach Street. The Street View for it shows lots of boxlike houses, with iron fences: Basically, one of the most typically Los Angeles streets I've seen. This, as close as I can figure, is where our buddy JP grew up.

As far as Google Maps can tell me, there isn't a Brunswick and either 8th street or avenue. It doesn't exist. Maybe some more NYC savvy player can correct me there. I guess it would fit with far-future aesthetic, and with the global warming thing? Perhaps New York looks severely different because of the rising water levels?

In that vein, Watts is near the coast, so perhaps it's already swallowed up by water levels, and New Watts is the replacement? Chilling.

I think that intersection exists in New Jersey, not far past the Holland Tunnel when you're heading west from NYC. But I don't know that area well. Is there anything of interest there?

Also, thanks donsoze for collecting all of the journal entries. Very convenient to have them in one place!

Re: JP Journal(s)

There's a Brunswick and 8th in Jersey City, which is what I'm assuming you're talking about. Looks like there's Carmine's Pizza Factory and a park.

Re: JP Journal(s)

This makes me think that a wiki may be useful. Would anybody particularly oppose/support a wiki? If I set one up, would it get used?

Re: JP Journal(s)

Node 3 entries up. I suppose there's no need to bump this thread anymore, but I will give you the standard bit of trivia: each bit number is preceded by a number of backslashes equal to the node at which it can be found (for example bit 3 appears as '/03' while bit 29 is '///29').

I'd be in favor of a wiki--and I'd work on it, especially now that we've got a 6-day lull in puzzling.

One small note on #30, the last part is a quote from Levinas, I think it is from Existence and Existents

Re: JP Journal(s)

So uhhh, how rare is it for NEX to intervene in forum threads? That kind of creeped me out...

But yeah, thanks for consolidating the journal entries!

Re: JP Journal(s)

NEX hasn't contributed too many times yet. And this is the first thread to be moved to the top. Definitely creepy.

Also, donsoze: you should add these journal entries to the wiki.

Re: JP Journal(s)

OK, added entries so far and tried to include their sources. I put the .pdf for 4.5 in as the source, but I wasn't able to see the journal entry when I looked at the PDF myself. Is there something I'm missing?

Re: JP Journal(s)

I took it from the reddit, I think its somewhere in the metadata (author and keywords both say ////37 for me, but I can't see any more)
